We haven’t done a latest new or vital statistics post in a while. There’s a lot going on right now and not all of it is fleshed out. But I thought I should get it out in the open. I think I will start a new column in this blog that combines our normal “vital statistics” posts with other general gaming news like recent game acquisitions to our library, movement within the group and the like. Let’s start with the biggest news: the location of our clubhouse, The Gaming Annex.
1. The Gaming Annex may be moving…or it may be staying put and expanding…we don’t know
The building where we are currently located (1976, 1980, 1984 and 1996 W Sherman Blvd) is being sold. It is not certain whether we will stay there. But don’t fret. The Gaming Annex will not close. Worst case scenario: we move into a bigger spot within a couple of miles of here.
As it is, we have about 800 ft². We could use about 1,000, maybe a little more. It would be ideal if we had enough room to store extra tables for games that take multiple sessions. It would also be great if we had a larger kitchen area too. There are two possibilities. The first is that we move. The second is that we stay and take over the adjacent suite at 1980 W. Sherman.
If you know of any commercial property that is available, don’t hesitate to let me know. It’s a real bear pouring through the listings.
I’ll keep everyone posted on any developments. If we move, I will need some of you to come over and help.
2. New Game Acquisitions
I’ve been doing a lot of streamlining to my game collection in the past few months. Games that we just don’t (or won’t) play have been banished. And new games, of course, have replaced them.
The Tuesday night group is moving more heavily into wargames. I’ve spent a considerable effort to bulk up on my wargame library. I picked up Empires of the Middle Ages, GMT’s Rise of the Luftwaffe, 8th Air Force, Conquest of Paradise and Empires of the Ancient World. These games will enter the rotation after we play Magic Realm (slated for this month).
The group’s tastes have been changing in other ways too. The taste for once-and-done games (such as T.I.M.E Stories) and legacy games has been a real draw lately. I’ve had my eye on Asmodee’s Death Wears White for a while now. I think I will spring this on them around Halloween. I also picked up Star Trek the Adventure Game. This is a two player game with a story paragraph book. One player takes on the role of the Klingons and the other the United Federation of Planets. This should make for a good campaign with one of my fellow Trekkies. (Probably not Rocky).
Rounding out my latest acquisitions would be Antike II, Return of the Heroes, Under the Shadow of the Dragon and Ancient Terrible Things. Dusty was so excited about Antike, he read the rules and taught the game last week. It was a hit! We played it a second time immediately afterwards. It’s the real deal. It will give Imperial 2030 a run for its money.
The rest of the group has been active in the marketplace too. Two members have picked up SeaFall. Dusty will be playing it on Tuesdays and I’m hoping Brian will bring it over on Thursdays.
Dusty and Brian also both picked up copies of Mechs vs. Minions. This game will sell out if it hasn’t already. This will be hitting the table very soon.
Last but not least: Nick Sima got a copy of Mystery at the Abbey. We will be rolling this out on a Thursday–shortly after he reads the rules.
3. Vital Stats
Attendance at The Gaming Annex has been increasing in the past several months. We’ve had a lot of recruits who are working out well. We are firing on at least two cylinders. Maybe two and a half.
We’ve cracked 90+ people in September. I anticipate we will get 100+ in October due to our heavy schedule. This alone warrants the extra floor space we are looking for.
Ever wonder how much time you actually spend at The Gaming Annex? This bar graph might help you figure it out. This shows attendance for 2016. (Look at Nick Sima! Over 100 times on our roll call!).
4. Upcoming Events
We will be having our next Kids’ Gala on October 29th. The festivities start at 11am and will last until about 3pm (this is when the parents get pooped). Our Kids’ Galas are always well attended. And they are the bomb! If you have kids ages 3 to 8, bring them over. We have lots of games for them. (Be sure to RSVP).
We are also having our inaugural play of Magic Realm. This is an epic Avalon Hill game. We are heavily into the process of reading and understanding the rules. But there is still time if anyone else wants to join.
Which brings us to our next game of Twilight Imperium. Joe showed tremendous promise in his full game of TI3. And Nick Sima won so he’s looking to repeat. We will have this on the schedule in November. Keep your eyes peeled.
